About Sweet Melodies

Brass Band Hymns in Tunes · Tonic Sol-Fa Edition

A Compilation of Brass Band Hymns

Sweet Melodies of Brass Band Hymnbook is a compilation based on suggested tunes and a few added ones from different hymnbooks. Hymns have been re-arranged, composed, and transcribed from staff notation into Tonic Sol-fa Notation for the benefit of all who appreciate music and wish to sing it the right way.

This compilation is based on suggested tunes in St John's Apostolic Faith Mission Hymnal, making it an essential resource for brass band members, choirmasters, and choristers.

"Omitted hymns in this compilation were deliberate since I couldn't locate the appropriate tunes in any of my research materials. However, I am responsible for every error and omission found in this compilation."

Sweet Melodies Hymn Book

Foreword

Right from the days when I started learning music and teaching music, I always wondered if there was a book I could find all the tunes I needed to teach brass band as far as the Sweet Melodies brass band Hymnal was concerned. For so long I had to research into so many hymnals to find the appropriate tunes for songs in the Brass Band hymnbook.

I had a great relief when in 2024, I was handed a compilation of tunes from the Sweet Melodies of Brass Band Hymnbook by Khehlah Buthelezi, Prof. S.M Motloung and later in 2025, a revised compilation by Khehlah Buthelezi, Rev S.M Motloung (Professor of Music), Composer Mkha Gidimisana.

Taking a cue from the Anglican and Methodist etc, I knew a Tonic Sol-fa edition of this compilation would be beneficial to both Choirmasters and Choristers to learn and sing with much ease.

In 2024 after some consultations with some members of the brass band, I and Prof S.M Motloung (the original founder of the idea) decided to start this project and after failed attempts, I finally had my breakthrough and this project has seen the light of day.
